Canonical have reversed their decision to remove Java from Ubuntu users’ machines.

Oracle, the owners of Sun Java, retired the ‘distributor license’ that allows operating system vendors to provide the package to users in August of last year. This change in terms forced Ubuntu’s security board to announce that it would be removing Sun JDK package from its ‘Partner‘ repository, and ‘upgrading’ the official Java release on Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 with an ‘empty’ package, thus disabling it. as a ‘security measure’.

Ubuntu have now decided against the latter action to ‘prevent unexpected failures’ on users installations.

“The Sun JDK packages will remain installed on current systems with no further security updates. On new systems, it will no longer be possible to install the packages from the partner archive. “

Sun JDK packages will be removed from the Ubuntu partner archive on February 16th 2012, after-which they will no longer be available to install through the Ubuntu Software Centre or Synaptic Package Manager.

Because no further security updates will be issued  for Sun Java on Ubuntu users who don’t rely on the official package are being urged to swap over to alternatives, such as the Oracle-endorsed OpenJDK.

The change in license does not affect availability of Sun Java for Linux only the permission for OSs to distribute it. Oracle’s Sun Java can be downloaded and manually installed from the Oracle website. Lazy users can use the solution provided by Ubuntu user Martin Wimpress.

Я использую для личных и рабочих целей дистрибутив Fedora 14, а следующим моим дистрибутивом скорее всего опять станет OpenSUSE. Раньше, в течение десяти лет я использовал OpenSUSE, поэтому этому дистрибутиву я уже по-настоящему доверяю. Мне не нравится следующая версия Fedora — Fedora 15, которая является «сплошным недоразумением».

Правда, перед возвратом на OpenSUSE, я обязательно попробую Debian, которым ещё никогда в жизни не пользовался.

Дополнительные пакеты

Опубликована небольшая программа, позволяющая более или менее удобно использовать Linux машину для работы с приложениями опубликованными на MS Terminal Server. Программа написана с помощью ruby и Qt и использует rdesktop как rdp клиента.

Возможности:

• Авторизация с использованием LDAP каталога AD. Авторизация происходит единоразово при запуске приложения, таким образом не требуется вводить пароль для запуска каждого приложения.
• Определение доступных пользователю приложений на основе групп AD.
• Запуск опубликованных приложения с помощью seamlessrdp.
• Возможность создания переводов на любой язык.

Недостатки:

• Открывает новую rdp сессию для каждого приложения, так как rdesktop реализует rdp протокол только 5-й версии.
• Возможно велосипедостроение и быдлокодинг.

После месяцев усилий, благодаря совместной работе Sam Protsenko и Alexander GQ Gerasiov, INSTEAD 1.6.0 был добавлен в репозиторий Debian.

Интерпретатор INSTEAD (Simple Text Adventure) позволяет играть в игры, которые по жанру являются смесью визуального повествования, текстового приключения и классических квестов 90-х.

На данный момент INSTEAD портирован на множество платформ: Linux, Windows, Mac OSX, S60, Maemo, Windows Mobile, Android и другие. Под движок уже написаны десятки игр, некоторые из которых доступны на нескольких языках. Кроме того, с помощью специального модуля, INSTEAD способен выполнять текстовые квесты из игр серии "Космические рейнджеры".

Возникла как-то на работе потребность организовать в сети хранилище для документации всякой разной. Требования: надежность, небольшой размер, объем в несколько террабайт. Мой выбор остановился на сетевом хранилище (Network Attached Storage) Iomega StoreCenter Ix2-200. В процессе исследования рынка выяснилось, что на этом устройстве используется урезанный вариант Debian Lenny, и есть возможность установить полноценный Debian Squeeze. Тем самым получить все возможности, предоставляемые данной ОС.

Итак, устройство было закуплено, я обложился документацией, найденной в интернет и приступил к установке ОС Debian Squeeze для архитектуры armel. К сожалению, доступная документация оказалась на английском, не полной и не точной, в общем был простор для размышлений. К тому же для первоначальной загрузки и переустановки ОС потребовался достаточно специфичный кабель RS-232.

В итоге под катом описан мой эксперимент (успешный), переведены необходимые куски чужих инструкций, и представлена полученная мною экспериментальная информация.

GNOME’s work on a revamped and repurposed ‘Epiphany’ web browser – which seeks to make the browser a core part of the GNOME experience – is coming along nicely.

The redesign of Epiphany, which is relabelled ‘Web’ in the app itself, seeks to to offer GNOME users a ‘simple, clean, beautiful view of the [internet].’

And despite development being relatively early on (Epiphany 3.3.4 isn’t scheduled for release until March) I don’t find it premature to say that it succeeds in its aim.

The name Epiphany finally rings true.

What’s New in Epiphany 3.3.4

Epiphany 3.3.4/Web is one of the first applications to make use of GNOME Shell’s “App Menu”. Clicking on the application title in the top bar drops down a range of configuration and preferences options.

The navigation toolbar is minimal. Buttons for ‘back’ and ‘forward’ are present, and look great in their visual coupling.

‘Stop’ and ‘Reload/Refresh’ actions have been merged and integrated into the URL bar itself – similar to Firefox and Chrome.

 

A ‘Super Menu’ replaces the traditional menu bar, thus following a trend seen in most web-browsers of late.

Epiphany’s rebirth as ‘Web‘ has only just begun.

With a renewed and reinvigorated aim, the Epiphany development team will next begin porting additional extensions and features over to the app; implementing a new (very stylish) ‘Overview’ page for accessing most-visited pages and bookmarks; and there’s also rumour of a ‘surprise gift’ being added to the ‘web application’ feature.

Exciting stuff.

If there is one thing that most people agree on about the wallpapers it’s that no one likes looking at bad looking wallpaper.

“Four Seasons” is a wallpaper pack I created inspired by the diversity of the four seasons of our planet. The pack includes wallpapers for each each season – Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, and a “Four Seasons” wallpaper which represents all of the seasons in a unified image.

In a turn of events not unlike we’ve seen before, Valve has posted a job listing for a Senior Software Engineer to work on their “highly available digital distribution platform” Steam.

However, unlike past job postings which have mentioned Linux and left some ambiguity as to what exactly Valve might be working on in this area, this posting clearly says the word “games” in one of the responsibilities out of the six listed.

“Port Windows-based games to the Linux platform.”

Could this be a sign that a Steam client and games are on their way to Linux? Perhaps. Valve could be responding to increasing Linux market share, or to the arrival of competitor Desura which recently released a client for Linux. They might simply be hiring a developer to work on their Linux server software.

Maybe it’s another wild goose chase as the Linux community awaits Steam support. Either way, interested developers can apply over at Valve, interested consumers can speculate below in the comments, just don’t get your hopes for official Portal 2 support any time soon.

Новшества:

• GTK+ 3, совместимость с GNOME 3.
• Новая база данных для обложек альбомов.
• Плагин Grilo для UPNP и Jamendo.
• Переписан плагин визуализации (теперь с использованием clutter).
• Переработаны некоторые части интерфейса.
• Новая система профилей кодирования.
• Плагины теперь основаны на libpeas.
• Значительно улучшен плагин dbus media server.

Также исправлено множество ошибок.

With the move to ‘the cloud’, increasing numbers of internet and mobile phone users, renewable resources on the decline, and a focus on green solutions to current problems, server rooms are getting much more expensive to maintain and run.

Nearly all servers are currently running x86 CPU architecture – the type of CPU most people are familiar with. It’s prevalent in laptops and desktops and has been the world leader in CPUs for many years. Those in the know will be familiar with another CPU architecture which has been taking the mobile world by storm, and now it might be on the verge of tapping into the lucrative server market. Enter ARM.

ARM is already responsible for powering 99% of mobile phones and tablets the world over, and Canonical’s ARM Manager David Mandala believes that Ubuntu Server on ARM is just around the corner.

A brief history of Ubuntu on ARM

Ubuntu on ARM began in 2008 when the team collaborated directly with ARM itself. Some wonder why Ubuntu didn’t go with the Debian route for ARM, and Mandala pointed out that Debian was compiled for an older version of ARM (v4), whereas Ubuntu was compiled for ARM v7.

Ubuntu’s first ARM release came about in April 2009 (Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope) which supported one board, the Freescale iMX51. In 9.10 and later, Ubuntu on ARM added support for more boards and in Ubuntu 11.10 last year, support was added for the popular Toshiba AC-100 Netbook.

ARM on servers – what’s the point?

ARM servers suck up much less power than traditional x86 hardware, sometimes as little as 12W at full load. They’re also smaller and generate less heat, which means server banks can cram more servers into a rack (up to 72 servers per unit)!

Ubuntu on ARM 12.10 to be released later this year will be the first to support the new ARM Cortex A15 board which has virtualization support.

Where to next?

ARM is gaining traction in 2012, and Mandala expects ARM 64 bit to hit the mainstream over the next 12 months. In 2013, Ubuntu on ARM will support the controversial UEFI boot which replaces the traditional BIOS and introduces “Secure Boot,” and 64 bit also means Ubuntu on ARM will theoretically support up to 16 exabytes(!) of RAM.

In April this year Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin will be released and will mark the first time Ubuntu on ARM images are built from ARMhf (hard float) which will make floating point operations and general code much faster. Some operations (such as font rendering and web page scrolling) have seen up to 30% increases in performance.

All up, Ubuntu on ARM has a promising future, on desktops, netbooks, mobile, TVs, and now, servers.

Сейчас механизм проверки подписи пакета отключён в конфигурационном файле по-умолчанию, пока не определены все нюансы подписания пакетов и распространения базы доверенных ключей. Innovative YouTube music player ‘Musictube‘ has received a small update.

Musictube is best thought of as a pseudo-cloud music player; it lets you find, arrange and listen to whatever music you like – as long as it’s on YouTube. It groups tracks by artist and album for logical browsing, and provides a set of handy filters for switching between live, studio, cover or remix versions of a track.

Small Update

The application’s developer, Flavio Tordini, sums up the recent changes to the application: -

“This Musictube version handles lesser known artists much better and skips YouTube videos that don’t really match the tracks in the playlist. The playlist is now restored across sessions and a Stop after this track command is now available.”

Support for accessing bookmarked folders through the Nautilus Quicklist in Ubuntu 12.04 has finally arrived.

The feature, one long overdue, lists user’s bookmarks – both custom and default – alongside a static entry for opening a new Nautilus window.

Which is all very handy.

As trivial seeming an addition as a bookmark list sounds, the developer behind it, Didier Roche, notes on his blog that it was not as straightforward to implement as one might expect.

Nautilus’ launcher item is enriched further by this addition, complimenting the ‘dynamic quicklist’ for file transfer/copy that debuted in Ubuntu 11.10.

Measuring at less than 100mm wide and 17mm thick with a dinky 3″ screen, the Ben NanoNote might just be the world’s smallest Linux laptop for the traditional definition of the word.

While pulling this out in public might get you a few odd looks, the Ben NanoNote actually runs a relatively feature rich piece of software called OpenWRT. It also happens to boast entirely open hardware and software, which not only makes it crazy small, but also Stallman-approved.

You might be fooled into thinking that Reducto from Harvey Birdman had gotten his hands (and shrink gun) on an old ThinkPad and made it fun size, but in fact this laptop is actually available to buy at $99.00 plus a small (literally) amount of shipping.

Its MIPS CPU architecture ensures you won’t be running Ubuntu on it unfortunately, but OpenWRT comes with a variety of useful tools, including seven(!) different terminals, multiple games (many of which are similar to Gameboy games from the 90s), as well as a browser (useless 99% of the time considering the NanoNote doesn’t have any wireless connectivity) and many other goodies.

The CPU runs at 336MHz but can be overclocked to 480MHz within the Settings menu by default. It also has 32MB of SDRAM, 2GB of flash memory, a small speaker and microphone, mini USB, and gets around 12 hours of battery life.

Typing on the Ben NanoNote is best achieved with the thumbs, weighing in at 126 grams it can easily be held in the hands just like a phone. The NanoNote is snappy enough, although we’re not asking much of it. Applications are widely inconsistent in appearance and behaviour, and there’s no consistent “back” button to exit applications so often a power cycle is the easiest way to get back to the home screen. It only takes a few seconds to boot.

Apparently it’s impossible to brick, and new versions of the operating system (as well as other MIPS compatible operating systems) can be flashed via USB, which is also how you give the NanoNote internet access via tethering.

So what can you do with it?

I spoke to Josh Deprez who bought one last year, and asked exactly what he uses his NanoNote for. Josh said he uses it successfully for note taking and graphing mathematical functions much like a graphics calculator, and a bit of light programming on the fly. Josh also says that it makes a decent audio player if you’re prepared to play .ogg files as the codec support isn’t fantastic.

So there we have it – is it the world’s smallest Linux laptop? If we exclude phones and stick to a conservative definition of ‘laptop’ then I think it just might be!

• Очень много улучшений удалённого GUI. Исправлено падение удалённого GUI при выходе из aMule. Добавлены новые опции запуска;
• Возможность пользователю прекратить работу приложения, если не найдены каталоги Incoming и Temp;
• Информация "Всего передано/получено";
• Исправления с ошибками обработки ссылок ED2K;
• Утилиты amulegui, amulecmd, amuleweb теперь могут использовать отдельный каталог для файлов конфигурации;
• Исправлено незапоминание приложением размера и позиции окна в некоторых операционных системах;
• Исправлена невозможность задать Английский язык интерфейса вследствие того, что после перезапуска программы снова выбирался "Язык системы по-умолчанию";
• Общее ускорение работы программы;
• amulecmd теперь работает с ссылками длинной более 256 символов;
• KDE Plasma апплет;
• В результатах поиска по раздаваемым файлам теперь ищутся и каталоги;
• При закрытии создаётся резервная копия и конфигурационного файла тоже.
